Longtime friends like Mack McLarty and Vince Foster helped me break into the Little Rock business and professional communities. He dropped the envelope on the table, opened his drawer and dug around in the notebooks, pens and paper clips until he found a pair of rubber gloves. I liked living on the farm, feeding the animals, and moving among them, until one fateful Sunday. The research got old after a while, but the errands were interesting.
I spoke to a local civic club, spent good time with my friends, and enjoyed a raft of congratulatory letters and phone calls. I've spent my whole life getting away from my past. All the other kids cleared the rope. But between the intervals there is normalcy.
